Work resumes Tuesday, as Labour suspends strike

The industrial action embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday, September 26, has been suspended indefinitely. NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, announced the suspension of the strike at a press conference on Sunday in Abuja.

“The suspension takes effect from today Sunday,” he said. The suspension means workers are expected to resume duties on Tuesday as Monday has been declared a public holiday by the federal government to mark the October 1 Independence Day. The workers are demanding a new minimum wage of about N50,000 instead of the current national minimum wage of N18,000.

Most state governors as well as proponents of true federalism have, however, argued that states should be allowed to set their own minimum wage especially as many states are barely able to pay the current N18,000 current minimum wage. On Wednesday, NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, said the union was open to dialogue on the strike.

“Our demand is that the tripartite negotiating council should be called back to conclude its assignment on minimum wage.” Mr Wabba said. The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, then assured the unions that the tripartite committee will reconvene to complete its negotiation. “Before the meeting on October 4, all necessary demands by organised labour would have been factored in,” Mr Ngige said. -Source Premium Times

House of Assembly member shot by unknown gunmen in Ekiti

A member of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Adedeji, is now battling between life and death after being shot in the head by unknown gunmen. According to The Nation, Adedeji was waylaid in the early hours of Friday while traveling along Ikere-Akure Road by the gunmen who opened fire as he made an attempt to escape from the scene. The lawmaker who represents Ekiti Southwest Constituency 2 was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for intensive care. Fayose provides food, lawyers for EFCC detainees, others

Former Governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose, has provided food for over 150 detainees of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Fayose also secured lawyers for detainees in need of legal representation and also promised to assist those having challenges in meeting their bail conditions. This was made known in a post on Twitter via his official handle being managed by his new media aide, Lere Olayinka. The former Governor had earlier announced that his Twitter account will be handled by his new media aide, Lere Olayinka. Fayose was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi on Monday, October 22, 2018. The former Ekiti state Governor pleaded not guilty to the charge of misappropriating N30.8 billion while in office.
