The Ohaoazara West State Constituency of Ebonyi has emerged the winners of the maiden edition of Divine Mandate Super Cup Football Competition, which attracted N3 million prize money.

The competition was named after Gov. David Umahi’s campaign slogan, “Divine Mandate”, for the 2019 governorship election.

In the final of the competition, Ohaozara West defeated Abakaliki North state constituency 1-0.

Ebonyi North came third, having defeated Ohaozara East constituency 3-0 in the third-place match.

The match, which was played at the Osborne Event Centre’s soccer pitch at Uburu (the governor’s home town), was watched by the governor, accompanied by top government functionaries, and hundreds of soccer fans.

In a speech, Umahi promised that his administration would continue to promote sports in the state.

He said, “I commend the organisers for a successful competition. We will continue to encourage budding sports talents in order to harness their skills.”

The governor announced a cash prize of N3 million for the champions, while the second and third-place teams received N1.2 million and N500,000, respectively.

He said that the 25 participating teams, including the National Youth Service Corps team, would receive N300,000 each.
He also said that the officials for the competition and Ministry of Youth Development and Sports would receive N500,000.

Charles Akpuenika, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, commended the governor for his commitment toward sports development in the state.

He said: “The competition was organised to foster peace, unity and interaction among the 24 state constituencies and toe the governor’s vision for a peaceful and viable Ebonyi.

The commissioner said that over 80 good players were discovered during the competition and will be groomed to form the state-owned team.

“30 best players from the pool will form the team and will be registered to compete in the second tier of the nation’s football league from June, 2019.

“This will be implemented with the governor’s approval because the team will represent the state in the league,” he said.
He commended the teams for their commitment, discipline and sportsmanship, while thanking the organisers for promoting fairplay during the competition. (NAN)
