COVID-19: Umahi deserves commendations for leading charge- P.Noble

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Chief Oluchukwu Ukie Ezeali (aka P. Noble) has commended the efforts of the state governor, Engr. David Umahi, in making sure that the Coronavirus pandemic does not spread to the state.

In a statement he signed and made available to Paulokahblog Saturday morning, P. Noble said that the proactive measures undertaken by the governor since the Coronavirus pandemic berthed in Nigeria is worthy of commendation and emulation.

He said: "The battle against the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic might be far from over, but the efforts of those standing at the frontlines have been nothing but heroic. Surely efforts count for something and that is why the Governors of Lagos State, Edo State and Ebonyi State standout in this wartime.

"It is particularly important to single out Engr David Umahi of Ebonyi State for the urgency with which he responded to this pandemic by immediately shutting down movement from commuters entering the State. He led a border patrol that not only put him in harms way, but also elicited the confidence the people of Ebonyi State to respond in kind, in this fight against COVID-19. When your Governor is at the war-front, a statewide compliance to directives becomes easier to achieve."

Continuing, he said: "Engr. David Umahi, even before the Federal Government took a decision, embarked on building proactive, preventive and management capacity to ensure that the devastation is reduced to the barest minimum. He courted the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to immediately activate the Abakaliki Virology Centre, which had long been equipped and handed over to the Federal Government. He built and equipped isolation centres, with the speed of light, to ensure that all suspected cases are quarantined timely.

"On the 2nd of April 2020, Gov. David Umahi signed the Ebonyi State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulation, 2020 into law. A task force had long been deployed to enforce and ensure compliance with the Stay at Home Order, ban on crowd gatherings, suspension of all wedding and burial activities within the State, ensuring the use of face masks in public places and regulating market activities through use of thermometers, hand-washing facilities and sanitizers to improve the hygiene level of the people of the State."

He added: "These efforts have so far paid off as Ebonyi State is yet to record any case of COVID 19, and it is expected that with the Governor in the trenches and the people of Ebonyi staying vigilante and compliant, the coronavirus will be a different story in the State.

"One might say that these efforts are expected and it is too early to commend. But the scale at which Gov. Umahi has responded to this pandemic has simply birthed a movie script. His doggedness, calculated risks and visionary leadership have shown, once again that the man in Abakaliki Government House is ahead of time."

Paulokahblog reports that Ebonyi is one of the nine states yet to record any Coronavirus case, with the latest figure released by NCDC standing at 1,095 cases, with 32 deaths and 208 discharged (as of Friday, April 24, 2020).

Iheukwumere said that, despite having limited resources, he dedicated his salary as SA to start the project in 2014, due to the fact that the beneficiary had been sleeping outside with his six children since 2007. Don't quit by Edgar Albert Guest

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you're trudging seems all uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit - rest if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - you may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems afar; so stick to the fight when you're hardest hit - it's when things seem...

Stop inflicting economic hardship on Ebonyians with tax demands, ex-SSG implores Umahi

Former Secretary to the State Government of Ebonyi State, Professor Benard Odoh, has implored the Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, to desist from inflicting economic hardship on Ebonyians. In an open letter he made available to Paulokahblog Friday morning, Odoh said that, "as a way of cushioning the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic on Ebonyi’s struggling economy, there is urgent need to jettison the collection of tenement rates/ground rents from landlords, excessive/forceful drive for quarry haulage levies and waiving of personal income taxes".  Odoh regretted that, despite the efforts of the state government in policing its borders against the COVID-19 pandemic, Ebonyi State, as of May 21, has recorded 13 cases and expressed hope that the situation would not get worse in the state in particular and Nigeria in general, even as he pledged support for the state government in ensuring that the active cases are managed successfully "to t...
