Group hails Buhari for appointing Obioma NECO boss

African Students Education Support Initiatives (ASESI) has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing a renowned educationist, Prof. Godswill Obioma, as the new Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO).

The group described the appointment as putting a square peg in a square hole, adding that Prof. Obioma's impressive track records in the nation's education sector, as well as his well known anti- corruption lifestyle, would help the Buhari government to overhaul and revamp NECO for optimum service to the nation.

ASESI, in a statement on Sunday signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Chinonso Obasi, and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki, noted that the former Ebonyi Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), who is a celebrated Professor of Mathematics and a Specialist in Monitoring, Evaluation, Curriculum Development and Education Management, had performed creditably well in all his previous appointments, stressing that his choice as NECO boss was one of Buhari's best appointments so far.

Obasi said: ‘’The African Students Education Support Initiatives (ASESI) wishes to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Prof. Godswill Obioma, former Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC) in Ebonyi state, as the new National Examination Council Registrar.

"We in ASESI believe that the appointment is in order, considering Prof. Obioma's track record in the education sector and his excellent performances in his previous appointments. It is on record that Prof. Obioma performed creditably well when he served as the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Education Research and Development Council, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation National Primary Education Commission, Director Research and Statistics National Business and Technical Examinations Board and Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Universal Basic Education Board among others.

"We recall that in 2019 general elections, when he served as the INEC REC Commissioner of Ebonyi State, ASESI was an independent observer in the elections and we were amazed by the uncompromising actions of Prof Obioma on issues bordering on complains before and during the election.

"He is a strong advocate of anti corruption and a progressive to the core. The National Examination Council is lucky to have Obioma at the helm of affairs in the face of challenges being faced by the agency. His appointment as NECO boss is coming at the right time when issues of financial impropriety are emanating from agency.’’

Don't quit by Edgar Albert Guest

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you're trudging seems all uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit - rest if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - you may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems afar; so stick to the fight when you're hardest hit - it's when things seem...

Stop inflicting economic hardship on Ebonyians with tax demands, ex-SSG implores Umahi

Former Secretary to the State Government of Ebonyi State, Professor Benard Odoh, has implored the Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, to desist from inflicting economic hardship on Ebonyians. In an open letter he made available to Paulokahblog Friday morning, Odoh said that, "as a way of cushioning the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic on Ebonyi’s struggling economy, there is urgent need to jettison the collection of tenement rates/ground rents from landlords, excessive/forceful drive for quarry haulage levies and waiving of personal income taxes".  Odoh regretted that, despite the efforts of the state government in policing its borders against the COVID-19 pandemic, Ebonyi State, as of May 21, has recorded 13 cases and expressed hope that the situation would not get worse in the state in particular and Nigeria in general, even as he pledged support for the state government in ensuring that the active cases are managed successfully "to t...
